Frequently asked questions about family sessions answered | Ruston family and newborn photographer

It’s time to start planning your fall family session!! I know here in North Louisiana it’s hard to think of that when we are still in blistering temps, but trust me, fall is coming!!

Here’s a list of frequently asked questions that just might be a help as you’re planning your fall family session.

DO WE NEED TO BRING PROPS?

My photography style doesn’t incorporate many props. Quilts and a few chairs every now and then is about as far as that goes. If you have any special items to your family, we are more than happy to incorporate them.

For newborn portraits, we like to keep it simple and really focus on those sweet babies. Swaddle blankets, little outfits ( sleepers, gowns, headbands, hats, etc) are welcome. Items that are special to your family can also be incorporated as well!

DO WE NEED TO FIND A LOCATION?

We have locations that we love photographing at but we are always open to locations that are special to our clients.

    Newborn sessions are done in-home.

HOW CAN WE PREPARE OUR KIDS FOR OUR SESSION?

In my opinion, there isn’t much preparing you can do other than letting them know they will meet someone new and that they will be taking their pictures. Let them know that we will have a great time together and that we will become friends before the night is over.

I make it a point to introduce myself to the little ones and really get down on their level to make them feel comfortable. I know that little ones can be really unpredictable and that having patience with them is key. No bribery needed.

    WHAT SHOULD WE WEAR?

When planning your session, selecting your outfits can be hard! What I like to recommend is to stick with neutral colors or earth tones and simple patterns such as dainty florals. Avoid everyone matching exactly and instead try to coordinate colors. Look on Pinterest for color pallets that pair well together or pull from the colors in your home.
Dresses photograph the best on mamas, they are just so flattering! Accessories and layers photograph really well and, almost always, the dressier the better. Once you book your session you will have access to our style guide where we give more advice and even share places to shop!

  • Three accounts on Instagram every mom should be following | Shreveport Louisiana newborn photographer

Three accounts on Instagram every mom should be following | Shreveport Louisiana newborn photographer

Motherhood is exhausting, especially in the first few months. Our bodies are healing, we’re not getting enough sleep, and we’re trying to keep this new little life fed and happy. It can feel overwhelming. But you’re not alone!

There are amazing communities of moms out there who are in the exact same boat as you. There are amazing people, who are experts in their fields, sharing their wealth of knowledge on social media for your benefit. It’s amazing, right?!

As a mom myself, and a newborn photographer in the Shreveport area, I’ve made it a mission to follow accounts that help us moms. I’ve found some really awesome ones and I’d love to share them with you today!

    Here goes:

    1. @takingcarababies is a baby and toddler sleep expert. We all need some of that in our lives!

    2. @feedinglittles is a baby and toddler feeding expert. They help you know when it’s time to give your baby what and they have great tips for picky eaters!

    3. @getmomstrong is a pre and post partum exercise specialist and, in my opinion, and expert in her field. She will teach you how to heal your core post baby and be your strongest self.

It’s so amazing to have resources you can easy reach for in these days of motherhood to help. If you know of any accounts that are a must follow, leave a comment below!

Jen and Abe | Minden Louisiana Photographer

Jen and Abe were so fun to photograph! We met for their session in downtown Minden Louisiana. A sweet southern town with all the southern charm. Downtown Minden is so fun to photograph because of all the historic homes, old trees, beautiful churches, and amazing brick streets. There is nothing like it!

If you haven’t heard, Minden was recently featured on HGTV Home Town Kickstart! This was something so special for this little town nestled in North Louisiana. There are so many people here with a heart to see Minden grow!

When we started this session, storms clouds rolled in and blocked the sun. This took the beautiful, sunlit locations I had scouted and made them a little les glowy, but we made it work! It was crazy and hot and we were all drippng in sweat by the time it was over, but we had a great time!!

These two radiated with love for each other which made it a breeze to photograph. Thank you so much, Jen and Abe! I loved capturing this time with you. I wish you all the happiness in the world!!

  • 5 ways to help a new mom | Ruston Louisiana Baby Photographer

5 ways to help a new mom | Ruston Louisiana Baby Photographer

Have you ever wondered how you can help a new mom out? As a family and newborn photographer in north Louisiana, I’ve got FIVE tips for you!

    Ruston Louisiana baby photographer
    1. Bring her a meal to feed her family! Not having to worry about meals is a huge relief.
    2. Pick up her groceries so she doesn’t have to worry about lugging all the kids to the store
    3. Take a load off of her by watching her kids so she can get an uninterrupted nap, or even just a shower! She’ll thank you for sure!
    4. Come by and do some quick cleaning for her- vacuum, mop, laundry, etc.
    5. Just be there for moral support. Avoid comments like breast is best or comments about her body and/or how tired she looks. Rather, let her know how great of a job she is doing. The newborn stage is overwhelming and exhausting. The last thing she needs is someone telling her she’s doing it all wrong.

  • Mary and Larry | The Barn at Big Oak Hill Ranch Wedding

Mary and Larry | The Barn at Big Oak Hill Ranch Wedding

The wedding of Mary and Larry at The Barn at Big Oak Hill Ranch was one that I won’t easily forget. This wedding venue nestled in the country out in Magnolia Arkansas is a stunning one.

Their day was centered around friends and family celebrating the love these two share. It was joy to be there to help preserve this day for a lifetime. There is something about love being celebrated with family and friends that just doesn’t get old. To see the joy and excitment on each face, how proud the parents are, the grandparents, each family member just beaming.

Everyone worked tirelessly to make this day go smoothly. There is nothing like a team of vendors that come together and help each other keep things smooth.

    Vendors:
Cakes- Little Things by Lee Bakery
Venue- The Barn at Big Oak Hill Ranch
Suits- Michaels Men’s Store in Homer, La
Flowers and Decor- Wedding Beyond Decor by Tierra

Thank you for the privilege to photograph such a special day in your life. It is something I do not take lightly. I wish you two all the happiness in the world!!

  • Our family photos by Angela Lloyd Photography | South Arkansas Photographer

Our family photos by Angela Lloyd Photography | South Arkansas Photographer

We had the incredible privelege of being able to swap family photos with Angela Lloyd. An amazing photographer based out of South Arkansas. She is the sweetest person you’ll ever meet and we loved every second of our time together.

We met out on her family’s land in Lewisville Arkansas where she started photographing our family. Once we were finished we swapped out and I photographed her family. You can see those here.

She was so wonderful with our kids and even mananaged some smiles out of Emma. Which, if you know her, you know that is a feat. She is as goofy as they come at home, but once we are in public she is so shy. We were afraid we wouldn’t get any smiles out of her, but Angela worked her magic and right at the end (when we finaly got to be close-ish to the cows) she warmed up and let her get some great photos that I wil cherish forever.

Thank you again, Angela, for these amazing images of us. I love them so much!!
